In 1995, a fire destroyed a thirty-year-old grove of Pinus muricata on Harris Grade near Lompoc, California Immediately, new pine seedlings began to grow. This species has evolutionary adaptation to a disturbance cycle. Photograph by Stanley A. Rice. Appears in Encyclopedia of Biodiversity.
